This is how Apple could be gearing up its forthcoming iPhone 16 models for an overhauled Siri experience powered by artificial intelligence.

Expected to debut in the second half of 2024 as the successor to the iPhone 15 series, the iPhone 16 is already making waves online with leaked specifications. According to TF Securities International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the upcoming iPhone 16 models will boast an enhanced microphone designed to significantly elevate the Siri experience and voice input on Apple’s future smartphones.

In a recent blog post, Kuo shared insights from his latest industry survey, revealing that the iPhone 16 series will showcase a notable improvement in microphone specifications, particularly in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This enhancement aims to measure the strength of the signal relative to background or ambient noise. Additionally, Kuo mentioned that the microphones on the iPhone 16 models will offer improved water resistance.

The motivation behind upgrading the microphones is tied to Apple’s endeavor to enhance Siri performance on the upcoming handsets. Kuo suggested a connection between this initiative and Apple’s decision to reorganize its Siri team, focusing on incorporating large language models (LLMs) and artificial intelligence-generated content (AIGC) by Q3 2023.

However, the inclusion of advanced microphone technology comes with a price. Kuo predicted a substantial increase in the average sale price (ASP) of the microphones for all iPhone 16 models, ranging between 100 percent and 150 percent more than their predecessors. Notably, Apple’s component suppliers Goertek and AAC are expected to be the primary beneficiaries of these hardware upgrades.

Kuo’s insights align with previous predictions, as Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had earlier indicated that Apple was working on significant Siri upgrades, leveraging its own LLM and introducing improved suggestions for the Messages app. Despite potential concerns with the AI features, the enhanced functionality is anticipated to make its debut as early as 2024, according to Gurman.
