On Tuesday, Apple introduced its latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops powered by the new M3 chipsets, which are built on a 3nm process technology.
Apple introduced its latest lineup of MacBook Pro models, all featuring the brand’s cutting-edge M3 chip, during its ‘Scary Fast’ showcase event on the night before Halloween. The event, held in Cupertino, California, unveiled the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops powered by the advanced 3nm chipset. These new Apple laptops are now available for pre-order in 27 countries, including India, and will officially hit the market on November 7. Concurrently, Apple has ceased production of its M2-powered MacBook Pro models.
With the pre-order availability of M3-powered Mac models, the M2 variants are no longer listed on Apple’s official website. This is standard practice for Apple, which typically discontinues older-generation products after launching their updated counterparts. For instance, the iPhone 14 Pro models were discontinued when the iPhone 15 series was introduced during the ‘Wonderlust’ showcase in September. Likewise, the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra were removed from the website when the Series 9 and Ultra 2 models were unveiled at the same event.
However, in this instance, the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops have replaced three previous models. The M2-based 14-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pros, released earlier in January, have predictably been discontinued. Additionally, Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Pro M2 model is no longer available on the website. The revelation of this development was first made by tipster Ishan Agarwal, who posted about it on Tuesday.
This change also means that the starting price for a MacBook Pro in India has significantly increased. The now-discontinued 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro began at Rs. 1,29,900 for the 256GB SSD storage variant, while the 512GB storage option was priced at Rs. 1,49,900. With the 13-inch model no longer in the lineup, the new 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro now sets the entry point, starting at Rs. 1,69,900 on the Apple Store. This represents a Rs. 40,000 difference in the base prices between the previous and current entry-level MacBook Pro models in India.
Both the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are available in M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max powered variants. The 14-inch version with an M3 Pro chip starts at Rs. 1,99,900, while the M3 Max variant of the laptop is priced at Rs. 3,19,900.
Although the entry-level MacBook Pro pricing has increased, the new 14-inch Apple laptop presents a substantial upgrade over its M2-powered 13-inch predecessor. Built on 3-nanometer technology and featuring a new GPU architecture, the M3 lineup delivers enhanced processing and graphics capabilities compared to the previous generation.
Apple’s M3 family of processors boasts up to 16 CPU cores, up to 40 GPU cores, and up to 16 Neural Engine cores. All the new Apple laptops come equipped with Liquid Retina XDR displays with a resolution of 3,024×1,964 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate. Apple claims that the base 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M3 chip can provide up to 22 hours of battery life on a single charge.
