Earlier predictions indicated that Apple would introduce a fresh MacBook Air model featuring an OLED display in 2024.
According to a report, Apple may postpone the release of new MacBook Pro models featuring OLED screens for several more years. Currently, Apple’s powerful laptops are equipped with Liquid Retina XDR screens, which offer impressive brightness and color accuracy thanks to mini-LED technology. However, those who were eagerly anticipating the introduction of OLED panels for the upcoming MacBook Pro models, which promise enhanced brightness, contrast, and power efficiency in certain situations, may have to wait much longer.
MacRumors reported that during a recent Bloomberg Intelligence webinar focused on displays, Ross Young, the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), mentioned that Apple might not unveil new MacBook Pro models with OLED screens until “2026 or 2027.” An earlier report this year suggested that the first MacBook with an OLED panel would be launched as early as next year, starting with the MacBook Air.
Young explained that Apple’s supply chain partners are still in the process of setting up manufacturing lines to produce OLED panels suitable for laptops. This process could take a couple of years, leading Young to predict that the release of an OLED MacBook Pro model may be as late as 2027.
Previously, there was speculation that Apple might introduce a new MacBook Air model in early 2024, utilizing “tandem stack” OLED technology to extend the lifespan of OLED screens, increase their brightness, and enhance power efficiency. It was also expected that MacBook Pro models would continue to feature mini-LED panels “for the foreseeable future.”
In December of the previous year, Young had predicted the launch of a MacBook Air model with an OLED display in 2024, along with the introduction of two new devices featuring OLED screens – 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models. Despite Apple’s habit of keeping product information under wraps until the official launch, more details about these rumored devices are likely to emerge in the coming months.
