In 2023, Apple made the decision to adhere to the European Union’s mandate, which stipulates that all smartphones sold in the EU must feature a USB-C port for wired charging. This move signifies a departure from Apple’s longstanding use of Lightning connectors, and it is clear that upcoming iPhones will incorporate a USB-C port.

There are numerous advantages associated with this change for Apple users, and we will outline some of them below.

1. One Charger to Power All Your Apple Devices

Apple introduced USB-C ports to its MacBooks as far back as 2015 and later incorporated them into iPads in 2018. Responding to the European Union’s requirements, as reported by Bloomberg, Apple stated that it had no alternative but to comply with the EU’s regulations. Furthermore, discontinuing the Lightning port would have generated a significant amount of electronic waste.

With the growing popularity of USB-C, Apple’s transition to USB-C will enable users to charge their iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks using the same cable. We believe this move will not only contribute to reducing electronic waste but also enhance convenience for users.

2. Ultra-Fast Charging Speeds

USB-C Power Delivery has the capacity to provide a robust 240W of power, whereas Lightning, in its native state, can only provide a modest 12W. This stark contrast means that USB-C can efficiently charge larger devices like laptops and power banks at a rapid pace.

To utilize Apple’s Fast Charge feature for iPhones, a USB-C to Lightning cable is required. This feature leverages USB Power Delivery to deliver greater power than what Lightning can handle natively.

Transitioning to USB-C will eliminate the restrictions associated with Lightning and enable significantly faster charging speeds. This change will be particularly advantageous for individuals who are frequently on the move and rely heavily on their iPhones throughout the day.

3. More Versatile Connectivity

USB-C is a significantly more widely adopted standard when compared to Lightning. It is featured on a wide range of devices, including displays, gaming consoles, and even household appliances. The continued use of Lightning is primarily driven by Apple’s decision to retain it exclusively for iPhones.

USB-C chargers designed for iPhones have versatile applications and can be utilized for various other purposes, offering both cost savings and a reduction in electronic waste. Furthermore, as most smartphones no longer come with chargers in the package, it is convenient to repurpose a USB-C cable from another compatible device, provided it meets the required power specifications.

4. Enhanced Data Transfer Speeds

In addition to significantly faster charging capabilities, USB-C also enables data transfer at speeds more than a hundred times faster than what Lightning cables can achieve.

With the USB4 v2.0 specification, USB-C can reach remarkable data transfer speeds of up to 80Gbps, whereas Lightning cables are limited to a mere 480Mbps. This substantial disparity in data transfer speed highlights the considerable technological advancement USB-C represents compared to Lightning.

While this increase in data transfer speed may not be a crucial factor for everyday iPhone users, it holds immense value for individuals frequently dealing with large files, such as photo and video editors.

Furthermore, it is hoped that Apple will activate the USB On-The-Go feature, allowing iPhones to function as USB hosts and connect to a variety of USB peripherals, including flash drives, gaming controllers, keyboards, mice, and even printers.

5. Enhanced Compatibility with Third-Party Accessories

Apple’s transition to USB-C will simplify the use of third-party accessories with iPhones. For a company known for its closed ecosystem, this change may cause some apprehension. After all, Apple’s Wearables, Home, and Accessories sector generated $6.5 billion in revenue in the third quarter of 2020, according to Business Insider.

With a USB-C iPhone, users will have access to a broader selection of third-party accessories, likely at more competitive prices since they won’t require Apple’s MFi certification. USB-C could potentially open up new possibilities for utilizing iPhones, including as gaming controllers or secondary displays.
